Zdeny ‘Stan‘ Stodulka was the set painter at Seven's Epping studios in the ‘60s and '70s.
When in staging I was often summoned to get him from the paint shop to touch up the canvas flats. (Those canvas flats eventually became timber and ply, heavy too). You would often see Stan painting artworks during his lunch break. Landscapes or the impressionistic style of his 'Studio 'A''' work. He was an artist in his own right, studying in Czechoslovakia, Germany and Italy before coming to Australia as a refugee from war-torn Europe in 1949. I was in staging when I asked for this one - it cost me a half bottle of White Heather. |

I felt guilty about being so lousy, but a full bottle would have cost me two weeks’ wage. I've kept it all these years. He did lots of variations (mainly with colour). It may have been based on a combination of photos from the early years of ATN. The giveaway is the manual crane, unlike the 'modern' Mole Richardson. Stan was kept fairly busy painting them for lots of staging guys, production assistants and camerapersons as well as the workers from the offices above his work area in the service area.
After retiring he had a couple of exhibitions of his works in Sydney. He eventually moved to Queensland with his family and passed away in 2009. I look at his painting and feel it typifies my time at Seven in many ways. It was an exciting time in television. He captured the essence of that feeling and what it was like working at 7 and Studio A 😊 What do you think? Mal Hamilton Any anecdotes? Send them HERE |
